Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older.  

Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required by visiting www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org and clicking on Activities & Events, Lectures & Classes or Resources. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online.  

Sample Classes for Summer – Wednesday, July 5, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Thursday, July 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Oh, What a Pain! – Thursday, July 6, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Traditionally, temporary as well as chronic pain has been treated with medications, some of which may have bad side effects and can be addictive. There are several alternative methods for pain management that do not rely on medications. Barbara Llamas, a health educator with Scan Community Health’s Independence at Home program, will explain how relaxation techniques and guided imagery can help manage pain. Legal Consultations – Thursday, July 6, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn about wills and trusts, conservatorships, durable powers of attorney and estate planning. Movie Matinees – Fridays, July 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest.

July 7: “Glory" (1989, R) starring Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick. Col. Robert Gould Shaw, a white officer, leads the U.S. Civil War’s first all-black volunteer company as he fights prejudices from his own Union Army as well as the Confederate Army. This film is based on true events.

July 14: “I Can Only Imagine” (2018, PG) starring J. Michael Finley and Dennis Quaid. The inspiring and previously unknown true story behind MercyMe’s beloved chart-topping song that brings ultimate hope to so many is a gripping reminder of the power of true forgiveness.

July 21: “Score: A Film Music Documentary” (2016, NR). This film features the most celebrated composers of music for cinema and how they developed some of the most iconic film scores in history.

July 28: “Captain Phillips” (2013, PG-13) starring Tom Hanks and Barkhab Abdi. This film tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years.

Tai Chi for a Healthy & Active Life – Thursday, July 13, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Learn the basic techniques of Tai Chi and its benefits for successful aging and how it connects the body and mind to relieve stress and pain and improve overall strength and cognitive focus. Standards and Show Tunes with Bob, Don and Dave – Thursday, July 13, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Join pianist Bob Lipson and singer Don Snyder with special guest bassist David Young for an afternoon of music featuring everybody's favorite show tunes and standards. Sing along, kick up your heels and dance or simply tap your toes to the rhythm of the music. MUSE/IQUE Offstage Education Workshop – Wednesday, July 19, at 3:30 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Take a deeper look at MUSE/IQUE's 2023 season "Music = Power.” Offstage programs feature guest artists direct from the concerts, hosted by Heather Lipson Bell, MUSE/IQUE's director of education, community engagement and digital media. Cultural Thursday: Dance Now – Thursday, July 20, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. The Dance Now ballroom team, led by Keiko Isshiki, will return to Pasadena Senior Center with an entertaining performance featuring a variety of ballroom dances. Dance Now was formed in 2005 by some retired but young-at-heart amateur ballroom dancers to promote a healthy, active and fulfilling lifestyle for older adults through ballroom dancing. Monthly Food Distribution — Friday, July 21, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Proof of income and California ID are required for first-time recipients. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Health Fair and Fresh Produce Distribution – Friday, July 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Health fair services indoors will include blood pressure and glucose testing, hearing tests, updates in Medicare health plans, resources and more. Preassembled bags of fresh, nutritious vegetables will be distributed on the patio while supplies last courtesy of Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. Everyone is encouraged to bring a bag or personal pull-behind cart to transport the produce home. Registration is not required. For more information, call 626-795-4331.

Your Home’s Role in Your Long-Term Security – Thursday, July 27, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Learn best practices for leveraging your home to secure your whole life and the key benefits and pitfalls of buying, selling or renting a home in today’s housing market. Mediation and Dispute Resolution – Thursday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn how to resolve conflicts with the help of a trained mediator, including property ownership, landlord/tenant disputes, workplace/employment issues, family disagreements and more. In addition to online classes, onsite events, and other activities, members, and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center are encouraged to visit the website regularly for a quarterly online magazine, free food delivery for older adults in need, COVID updates specifically for older adults and more.   

The center is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that has served older adults for more than 60 years. Beginning Monday, March 6, extended spring and summer hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to noon. Rooms are sanitized after each use. Masks are optional.
