Sample Classes for Fall – Monday Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Whether you’re interested in fitness, learning a new language or pursuing a new hobby, come to Class Tastings, also known as Sample Classes, meet the instructors and sit in on free, 30-minute mini-versions of 15 of the 40 fee-based fall courses that will be offered beginning Monday, Oct. 9. Cultural Thursday: Hot Tamale! – Thursday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a fun and in-depth exploration of the tamale in all its forms throughout the Americas and South Pacific. Presented by Tom Sanchez, a native Angeleno who grew up with a passion for the myriad histories and cultures of Los Angeles. After working as a researcher for a United Nations Agency in Caracas, Venezuela, he created his own tour company, MrLATours, which spotlights the enormous cultural diversity and histories of Los Angeles neighborhoods. Monthly Food Bank Distribution — Friday, Oct. 6, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Proof of income and California ID are required for first-time recipients. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Opening boxes on the premises is prohibited. Movie Matinees – Fridays, Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27, at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest.
- Oct. 6: “Fantasia” (1940, G) starring Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. This collection of animated interpretations of classical music ranges from abstract to depictions of mythology and fantasy, with prehistoric, supernatural and sacred settings.
- Oct. 13: “The Age of Adaline” (2015, PG-13) starring Blake Lively and Harrison Ford. A young woman born at the turn of the 20th century is rendered ageless after an accident and, after many solitary years meets a man who complicates the eternal life into which she has settled.
- Oct. 20: “Somewhere in Time” (1980, PG) starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. A Chicago playwright uses self-hypnosis to travel back in time and meet the actress whose vintage portrait hangs in a grand hotel.
- Oct. 27: “Coco” (2017, PG) with the voice talents of Anthony Gonzalez and Gael García Bernal. Confronted with his family’s ancestral ban on music, aspiring musician Miguel enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great grandfather, a legendary singer. Documentary Film: “Woman in Motion” – Friday, Oct. 13, at 6:30 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. To most of the world, Star Trek’s Lt. Uhura, as portrayed by Nichelle Nichols on television in the 1960s, is a pop culture icon. What they may not know is that Nichols, who worked hard to enable African Americans, including women, to enter the astronaut corps, which changed the NASA space program forever. Medicare Resource Fair – Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Reassessing healthcare needs each year and comparing programs that can help keep costs down while maximizing benefits is essential for aging well. Medicare open enrollment – the annual time period when older adults can make changes to their Medicare and prescription drug coverage – is Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Any changes will go into effect Jan. 1, 2024. Whether someone is interested in choosing a new Medicare or Part D plan, or switching from Medicare Advantage to original Medicare, learning whether they are eligible for Medigap and more, this is an important event to attend. Cultural Thursday: Cosmic Hour with Carnegie Observatories – Thursday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. We are made of the residue of nuclear reactions assembled in the furnaces of massive stars known as supernovas, yet for decades astrophysical models have failed to explain how such immense supernovas explode and seed the universe with this forcibly ejected material. Join this fascinating talk presented by NASA Hubble-Einstein Fellow David Vartanyan of Carnegie Observatories, who will discuss the recent shift that transformed the understanding of supernovas and how theorists keep up with the rapid advancement of observational capabilities. Health Fair and Fresh Produce Distribution – Friday, Oct. 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Health fair services indoors will include blood pressure and glucose testing, hearing tests, updates in Medicare health plans, resources and more. Preassembled bags of fresh, nutritious vegetables will be distributed on the patio while supplies last, courtesy of Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. Free Flu and COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for All Ages – Thursday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the flu vaccine as the best way to protect people against influenza and prevent its spread. The CDC also recommends the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months and older to protect against that virus, including older adults because they are more vulnerable. Food Pantry – Ongoing weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Don’t let financial hardship, being homebound or other issues prevent you from eating healthy food. Pasadena Senior Center volunteers deliver food and other supplies to your door while maintaining social distancing. To request food delivery, call 626-685-6732 and leave a message. Someone will return your call as soon as possible.
Home Tea Program – Ongoing. Anyone 50 and older can sign up to receive tea and an inspirational card once a month. To participate in this program, call 626-685-6732.
In addition to online classes, onsite events, and other activities, members, and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center are encouraged to visit the website regularly for a quarterly online magazine, free food delivery for older adults in need, COVID updates specifically for older adults, and more.
The center is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that has served older adults for more than 60 years. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Rooms are sanitized after each use. Masks are optional.
