What Can Your Mobile Device Do? – Thursday, Jan. 4, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Learn about everything you can do on your mobile device, including how to use apps, contacts, email and much more, and get all your questions answered. Presented by Pasadena Senior Center’s Peter Matus.
Legal Consultations – Thursday, Jan. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn about wills and trusts, conservatorships, durable powers of attorney and estate planning. To schedule a required appointment, call 626-795-4331.
Monthly Food Bank Distribution — Friday, Jan. 5, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Proof of income and California ID are required for first-time recipients. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Opening boxes on the premises is prohibited. Movie Matinees – Fridays, Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26, at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest.
- Jan. 5: “What Happens Later” (2023, R) starring Meg Ryan and David Duchovny. Two former lovers see each other for the first time in years when they find themselves snowed in at an airport overnight.
- Jan. 12: “American Symphony” (2023, PG-13) starring Jon Batiste and Lindsey Burnes. In this deeply intimate documentary, musician Jon Batiste attempts to compose a symphony as his wife, writer Suleika Jaouad, undergoes cancer treatments.
- Jan. 19: “The Shepherd” (2023, PG) starring Ben Radcliffe and John Travolta. On Christmas Eve, a fighter pilot on his way home gets lost mid-flight over water and needs a miracle to land safely.
- Jan. 26: “Wish Dragon” (2021, PG) with the voice talents of Jimmy Wong and Constance Wu. In this animated film, a determined teenager who longs to reconnect with his childhood best friend meets a wish-granting dragon who shows him the magic of possibilities.
What’s So Great About Assisted Living? – Thursday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. More and more assisted living complexes are built, and many people have friends or family members who have moved to these communities. Is this the right time for you? What are the costs? Learn how to find peace with this transition and how to make the most of the search and settling process. Presented by Foundation for Senior Services.
Dementia: When Home is No Longer an Option – Thursday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Learn about different types of dementia and how it can be managed at home. This discussion will include what to consider when home is no longer an option, how memory care facilities operate, how to pay for care, and veterans’ eligibility and regulations. Presented by First Light Home Care.
Health Fair and Fresh Produce Distribution – Friday, Jan. 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Health fair services indoors will include blood pressure and glucose testing, hearing tests, updates in Medicare health plans, resources and more. Congresswoman Chu will speak about updates to Social Security and Medicare. Preassembled bags of fresh, nutritious vegetables will be distributed on the patio while supplies last, courtesy of Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. Completing Cycles of Action – Thursday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. What are cycles of action and how can we complete them so we can be more present in life? Are you struggling to get even half the things done that you used to? Perhaps some of the reasons are obvious, but others aren’t. Be part of this interactive discussion to find out how cycles of action apply to you personally. Topics of discussion will include past relationships, disappointments and unmet expectations. Presented by Foundation for Senior Services.
Mediation and Dispute Resolution – Thursday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn how to resolve conflicts with the help of a trained mediator, including property ownership, landlord/tenant disputes, workplace/employment issues, family disagreements and more. Presented by Loyola Center for Conflict Resolution.
Food Pantry – Ongoing weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except Dec. 26 to 29. Don’t let financial hardship, being homebound or other issues prevent you from eating healthy food. Pasadena Senior Center volunteers deliver food and other supplies to your door. To request delivery, call 626-685-6732 and leave a message. Someone will return your call as soon as possible.
Guided Tours of Pasadena Senior Center – Mondays, Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29, at noon and Thursdays, Jan. 4, 11, 18 and 25, at 10 a.m. onsite at PSC. Take a guided tour with a PSC ambassador and learn how the center can enhance your life. Peek in on various activities at the center, such as an art class, dance lessons, computer lab and dozens more, and learn everything else about this first- ever accredited senior center in California.
Health Insurance Counseling – Every Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Center for Health Care Rights provides free Medicare and Medi-Cal counseling and advocacy services. Call 800-824-0780 during hours of operation.
Home Tea Program – Ongoing monthly. Anyone 50 and older can sign up to receive tea and an inspirational card once a month. To participate in this program, call 626-685-6732.
In addition to online classes, onsite events and other activities, members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center are encouraged to visit the website regularly for a quarterly online magazine, free food delivery for older adults in need, COVID updates specifically for older adults and more.
The center is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that has served older adults for more than 60 years. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 8 am to noon. Rooms are sanitized after each use. Masks are optional.
